Choose a simple subject
A silhouette, a stylised animal or a flower stays readable in a small pattern. A plain background avoids unnecessary yarn changes. Start with a small design to get used to reading diagonally.
Connect squares to the finished size
Pattern dimensions in squares are not centimetres. Size depends on yarn, hook, stitch and tension. Make a swatch with your materials to estimate the finished width and height.
Simplify colour changes
Keep colours that define outlines and important areas. Look for isolated squares: a small edit can simplify your work while keeping the character of the design.
Choose C2C mode
Open your project in diagonal mode and check the starting corner. Review the first diagonal before crocheting. Mark squares as you work.
Keep a reference before a break
Check the last completed square and the yarn position on your piece. Compare these two references when you return. Find the project in the gallery or through the resume card.
Before you start
Check your design, materials and the actual project size. The best settings are those that let you enjoy making your idea.
